When we're in the midst of overactive nervous system response, it's challenging to remember that bringing our awareness to our breath and consciously breathing will help us shift into a more relaxed state. This happens because the part of our brain that stores vital information about calming ourselves is not accessible when we're distressed. The good news is that when we practice relaxed and conscious breathing, we are more apt to draw upon these same techniques when things are unsteady in our life.
